A look back at the famous Erasmus Program
The Erasmus program celebrated its 37th anniversary in 2024. Created in 1987, more than 14 million people have benefited since its inception. Since 2014, with Erasmus+, apprentices, trainers, jobseekers, young graduates, secondary school pupils, high school students, and sports facilities staff can also benefit.
Why the name Erasmus?
The Erasmus (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) refers to the philosopher and humanist during the Renaissance Desiderius Erasmus.There are currently 33 countries taking part in the Erasmus+ program.
Key dates
1971: European Community agreed on the principle of cooperation in education.
1976: The foundations of Erasmus are laid with the “Joint Study Programme”.
1983: The principles of cooperation between higher education institutions in Europe are defined.
1987: The Erasmus program is adopted.
2014: Erasmus became Erasmus +.
The Erasmus Experience
The Erasmus experience enables beneficiaries to develop language skills, professional skills and cross-disciplinary skills.
Erasmus provides an opportunity to discover the culture and customs of the host country and to develop a sense of community. Today we talk about the « Erasmus generation » to describe these people who have created international bonds of friendship and have a sense of European citizenship and its motto « United in the Diversity » .
