Let's look back on this history in 2 minutes:
1951 -Paris Treaty: European Coal and Steel Community.
6 countries (West Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) pool their coal and steel industries.
1957 - Rome Treaties: European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. The 6 expand their cooperation to other economic sectors.
1962 - Common Agricultural Policy.
1973 - 1st expansion: UK, Ireland, Denmark.
1981 - 2nd expansion: Greece.
1985 -The Schengen agreement provides for the gradual abolition of borders and the free movement of people.
1986 -3rd expansion: Spain and Portugal.
1992 - The Maastricht Treaty created the European Union, laid the foundations for a single currency, and established European citizenship.
1995 -4th expansion: Austria, Finland, Sweden.
2004 -5th expansion: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia.
2007 -6th expansion: Romania and Bulgaria.
2008 -The Treaty of Lisbon makes the EU more democratic and efficient.
2012 - EU receives the Nobel Peace Prize.
2013 - 7th expansion: Croatia.
Nine other countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Georgia) currently have the status of candidate countries for European integration.
