Articles 2 and 3 of the Lisbon Treaty and the Charter of Fundamental Rights define the EU's aims and values. The Lisbon Treaty, signed in 2007, currently governs the operation of the EU.
Let's take a look at the main objectives of the EU within its borders :
- promote peace and the well-being of people;
- provide an area of freedom, security, and justice;
- achieve sustainable development;
- protect and improve the quality of the environment;
- encourage scientific and technical progress;
- fight social exclusion and discrimination;
- promote social justice and protection, equality between women and men, and the protection of children;
- promote economic, social, and territorial cohesion and solidarity;
- respect culture and linguistic diversity.
The EU’s objectives are supplemented by the following values :
- Human Dignity - Equality - Freedom - Democracy - Rule of law - Human Rights -
Serious and persistent breaches of these principles by a member state may result in sanctions by the Council of the EU such as suspending certain rights.
When you take part in the Erasmus Programme, you are helping to promote the different values and principles of the EU.
Indeed your investment in school, university, and professional exchanges in companies, cultural organizations, or associations encourages intercultural dialogue.
In this way, it permits to increase inclusion, tolerance, and social progress in the EU.
